Titus 2:7-8 “Show yourself in all respects a model of good deeds,
and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, and sound speech that cannot be
censured, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say
of us.” (RSV)
Paul wrote this Scripture to illustrate
for us the relationship between faith and practice. It is imperative for
Christians to behave in a manner that represents what they believe. People are
watching us and waiting for us to fall so that the doctrine that we profess can
be questioned and ridiculed. Paul admonishes us to be a good role model. He
reminds us that we must fill our time with good deeds. We should be finding
ways to reach out to others in service so that we can practice what we preach.
This does not have to be a big difficult endeavor. It can be something as
simple as changing our mindset to focus on the needs of someone else and not so
much on ourselves. Good deeds don’t have to require a lot of time or money, but
they can make someone else’s day a little bit better. Try letting the man with
one item that is behind you in line at the grocery go first, or what about
paying for the order of the car behind you at the fast food drive up. How about
today you make a conscience decision to find a little way to brighten someone
else’s day!
